Shared Java Hosting is simple web hosting, where all domain using same JVM sharing by all websites. If they are using tomcat, all web application put in same tomcat’s deployed directory. If you put your servlet or xml file which required to restart tomcat, you cannot restart tomcat yourself. You need to send request to your web hosting company.

Private Java Web hosting

Private means private, not shared by others. Web hosting company provide you memory for your JVM e.g 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB more memory mean more cost. In private you can have option to restart tomcat server stop server start server. JVM is separate in this plan.

Limitation of shared java hosting

1. JVM Shared by all website which is hosted in same server. If some one using loop big loop in java, all process will be used by that website. Your website have to wait for resources to be freed by that loop.
2. If error come in JVM all website will be down
3. Not reliable for serious business
