No such need of using xml in J2EE project. Can use J2EE project without any xml.
Mostly xml use in java project
for storing configuration data for web.xml, server.xml, context.xml
Second it is used also to transfer data for web services

xml play a good role in java framework and java application.
All web server uses xml file storing and sharing configuration information.

like Tomcat
1. tomcat-users.xml (tomcat/config)
2. server.xml (tomcat/config)
3. context.xml (tomcat/config)
4. web.xml (tomcat/config)
5. catalina-tasks.xml (tomcat/bin)

java application uses

1. web.xml (WEB-INF) deployment information and servlet mapping
2. struts-config.xml (Struts form bean action mapping information)
3. validation.xml (Struts validation information)
4. tiles-defs.xml (Keep struts tiles information)

EJB use xml

1. ejb-jar.xml
2. ejb-client.xml

hibernate object-relational mapping use xml for configuration

Spring framework also use xml

In web service, we use xml to share or transfer information or data
