Hi

I have install Linux on a machine. Everything installed properly. This machine having Intel processor with in-built network Ethernet adapter. I have a netgear wireless network adapter card. I have plugged in motherboard. But this wireless network is not working. Instead of wireless network card, ethernet card working fine and showing in ifconfig command as eth0. In ifconfig wlan0 is not showing. When i check in hardware devices it is showing wireless device is present there. And in network option of GUI mode, only eth0 is showing, not wireless card showing. What should i need to do to configure wireless network, in netgear installation CD no linux driver is given. Where from i can download driver for wireless linux.

Very few companies provides driver for Linux system and all company only provide drivers for windows operating system. Netgear also don't not provide drivers for Linux operating system. So directly you cannot install wireless card in Linux machine.

You can use NDISwrapper for installing wireless card driver on Linux system. This NDISwrapper helps you to install windows wireless driver on Linux. This needs *.inf or *.sys file and rest of work it do itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ndiswrapper

First install NDISwrapper in Linux by downloading this RPM from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/

After download NDISwrapper unzip anywhere

Code:
[root@centOS:~]#cd /ndiswrapper-1.53

Code:
[root@centOS:/ndiswrapper-1.53] #make

if no error found next step

Code:
[root@centOS:/ndiswrapper-1.53] #make install

check ndiswrapper installed correctly or not

Code:
[root@centOS:/ndiswrapper-1.53] ndiswrapper

After installing NDISwrapper if you have driver for netgear wireless card you can install

or download wireless card driver also from
wg311v3_1_0.zip
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wg311v3.asp

Steps to install wg311v3 wireless driver

unzip wg311v3.zip and you can use windows xp driver for installation

Code:
[root@centOS:/ndiswrapper-1.53]#cd /wg311v3_1_0/WG311v3 V1.0/Driver

Code:
[root@centOS:/wg311v3_1_0/WG311v3 V1.0/Driver]#ndiswrapper -i WG311v3.INF

Code:

#modprobe ndiswrapper

Now assigning ip address and MAC and default gateway

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
open this
ifcfg-eth0 file
and make another file with name ifcfg-wlan0 save it
Quote:

# Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt
# for the documentation of these parameters.
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=wlan0
HWADDR=00:1B:2F:2C:E0:D1
BOOTPROTO=none
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.0.95
GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
DHCP_HOSTNAME=centos
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
ESSID=
CHANNEL=9
Mode=Managed
RATE=Auto
DOMAIN=

Give the hardware address which is given in netgear card.

save this

check
Code:

ifconfig

Showing wlan0 interface ?
