1. Struts,
2. JSF,
3. Spring,
4. Hibernate

These all are modern framework of J2EE. Struts is most easy to learn and use. Very useful for beginners.
Struts popularity increasing day by day, because it comes with validator struts tag lib, tiles.

JSF is more advance than Struts and mostly use for View layer (Presentation layer). It provides user to use sql queries from JSP page, Iterator, and many more. Alone JSF use in application I have not seen. Mostly use JSF at presentation layer (JSP).

Spring is more advance and normal framework. Spring use beans mostly in application. Spring provide more secure to big applications. Banking application use EJB or either spring to transaction between database and client.

Hibernate is an object-relational mapping (ORM) library for the Java language. In simple application, SQL queries write on JSP page and these sql use statement or preparestatement and execute on Database server. These queries are designed for certain Database like Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, Db2 or MySql. These brand have different format and standard of SQL functions. Hibernate is a thing come between of two SQL and java code. Hibernate treat SQL as object and mapped it to your application.

Finally, All framework is used from different purpose. We can not tell which is best.
Some companies use JSF at presentation layer + action of struts + transaction spring for securing application + Hibernate for SQL persistence

We can use combination of struts and hibernate or struts, spring and hibernate.
